Clunk Click Overturns Government’s Backup Fiasco
Clunk Click has won a battle with The Cabinet Office over the government’s controversial website Get Safe Online.

Following several months of lobbying the DTI and The Cabinet Office and even raising Parliamentary questions in The Commons, Clunk Click has managed to turn around the government’s decision to list only American data backup providers on the site.

Clunk Click managing director, Paul Roberts, explains, ‘Get Safe Online was set up to advise British internet users on internet security. When we discovered that the British government was promoting American companies on the site at the expense of UK businesses we were understandably shocked and immediately took steps to rectify the situation.’

Clunk Click is now the only UK data backup business represented on the site whose sponsors include some of the world’s most influential technology companies including Dell, eBay and Microsoft.

Clunk Click has been demanding the removal of the US backup companies and the inclusion of UK businesses. ‘This is not just an exercise to promote Clunk
Click and we will not stop here. As one of the most respected companies in the data industry we intend to make the government see sense over this issue.'

Government departments behind the scheme include the DTI, the Home Office and the National Infrastructure Security Co-ordination Centre.

‘We were amazed at the reaction from The Cabinet Office who told us they have no intention of removing the American companies. It’s staggering particularly as we have been pressing the point that British business and personal data is being put at risk through the comparatively lax data protection laws in the US.’

In the US it is acceptable to use data for purposes which may be illegal under European legislation. Recommending that UK businesses store data with US companies compromises the security of UK business and personal data and runs contrary the purpose of the Get Safe Online initiative.

‘Clunk Click is a leading UK provider of data backup and storage solutions and we are disappointed that we were not approached regarding this site in the first place, let alone that we have had to lobby so hard to get representation’, said Roberts. ‘We will continue to work towards a satisfactory resolution for the good of the data storage industry in the UK, and for the protection of UK data for both businesses and individuals.’
